“Memory, Female Noun” rescues my family’ s super 8 movies, with new Super 8 footage from a movie I was doing about Barbara Virginia, one of the pioneers of Portuguese cinema and one of the first women to be present in the 1st edition of Cannes Film Festival in 1946 with a feature film.

The 5th edition of Frames – Portuguese Film Festival casts the light on women.
Frames On Women is firstly about the complex problem of the representation of women in film and, secondly, about giving fair visibility to women through Portuguese cinema. Considering the vast majority of contemporary cinematic depictions is still linked to the male gaze, it is imperative to counteract it. This edition features therefore a selection of films from women and/or about women, placing the female gender on the foreground.

In March 2018, Frames – Portuguese Film Festival is heading to its fifth edition under the theme Frames On Women. This edition is all about bringing forward the complex problem of the representation of women in film and giving fair visibility to women through Portuguese cinema.
A documentary about the first woman to direct a film in Portugal, in the 1940s, who was also the first woman to compete with a film at Cannes, in 1946 – “Três Dias sem Deus”, of which 26 silent minutes are left.Screening

Bárbara Virgínia foi a primeira cineasta portuguesa a realizar uma longa-metragem. Na jornada de descoberta desta personagem histórica, Luísa Sequeira revê a história do cinema português e a forma como uma mulher conseguiu, ainda que apenas em parte, desafiar as convenções do seu tempo.
Bárbara Virgínia was the first Portuguese woman filmmaker to make a feature film. In the journey of discovery of this historical character, Luísa Sequeira reviews the history of Portuguese cinema and the way a woman managed, though only partially, to challenge the conventions of her time.
Bárbara Virgínia (1923-2015) foi a primeira cineasta portuguesa a realizar um longa-metragem e a única mulher a fazer um filme na época da ditadura de seu país, além de ser também a primeira diretora competindo na edição de estreia do Festival de Cinema de Cannes, em 1946. Nos anos 1950, Bárbara se mudou para São Paulo e não retornou a Portugal. Por que não fez mais filmes? Por que não voltou para o seu país de origem? Filmado entre Brasil e Portugal, o documentário acompanha a diretora Luísa Sequeira em busca de Bárbara Virgínia.
Bárbara Virgínia (1923-2015) was the first Portuguese filmmaker to make a feature film and the only woman to make a film at the time of the Portuguese dictatorship, as well as being the first female director competing in the first edition of Cannes Film Festival, in 1946. In the 1950’s, Bárbara went to live in São Paulo and did not return to Portugal. Why didn’t she make more movies? Why didn’t she come back to her country of origin? Filmed between Brazil and Portugal, the documentary follows the director Luísa Sequeira in search of Barbara Virginia.
